We are on our sixth list of Word Wall words already! We do a list of 10 words every two weeks. I have magnetized words, color-coded by list, that I post on my easel to review each day. Then, those are posted on the big Word Wall on Friday at the end of the two week period. Students get smaller cards to cut and keep in their book box. During Word Work, students may study and practice their Word Wall cards. Some of the choices students have right now are: reviewing flashcards with a friend or independently, playing Memory Match, writing words on the whiteboards, or playing Tic Tac Toe. For many years, I had some really cute wooden Tic Tac Toe boards, but novelty is HUGE with 1st graders...so I started making and using my seasonal ones. The boards are changed out every other month or so and they are a big hit! Kids feel like they are playing a fun game, but they are really getting tons of exposure and review time with high frequency words. They can choose to play with their weekly Word Study words as well.
